Uncle Vinny's Toy Drive: A Legacy of Love
They set a goal of $5,000. They raised $17,000.
This is the story of Uncle Vinny's Toy Drive — and the family who turned loss into one of the most moving community initiatives to come out of Brampton in recent years.
In this episode, host Bram Bains sits down with his high school friend Sandy Mann — founder of Uncle Vinny's Toy Drive — to talk about grief, legacy, community, and what it really means to give back to where you came from.
Who is Uncle Vinny?
Sandy's cousin Vinny passed away in December 2019 at a very young age. Rather than let grief define the holiday season, Sandy and his family channelled it into something powerful — a toy drive that honours Vinny's love of kids, the holidays, and the community he came from.
What started as a small idea has grown into a full-scale charity event. This year the drive held a mehfil at Elite Banquet Hall in Brampton — every seat filled, every dollar going directly to toys for kids in Malton.
What you'll hear in this episode
Who Vinny was and why his memory sparked a community movement
How a $5,000 goal turned into $17,000 raised in one night
What it felt like to invite Vinny's parents on stage and hand them the cheque
The role of culture, community, and giving back to Malton
What's next for Uncle Vinny's Toy Drive
Sandy described inviting Vinny's parents onto the stage and presenting them with the cheque. His mom had the biggest smile. His uncle asked for one of Vinny's sweaters. It's the kind of moment that reminds you why community work matters.
As Sandy put it — "Kids are pure. Kids are genuine. You give them something they don't have — and all you see is a big, genuine smile."
