Maverick Insurance Brokers Joins the Brampton Honey Badgers as an Official Partner

Last year I spent a week in Niagara with CAA for their annual BMA Ignite retreat, where they hand-picked twenty brokers from across Ontario to workshop marketing. I was about a year into building Maverick, and the biggest takeaway for me was simple: build at home. Home being Brampton.

While there, an exec invited me to a Honey Badgers game. I caught one of their final games that season and left thinking — this is awesome, how come more people don't know about this?

Fast forward to this season, and the Honey Badgers ownership group has been making real moves — bringing in NBA executives, rebuilding the roster and the organization. Before the season started, I sat down with CEO Al Whitley to learn about his vision for the club. That conversation is part of why I'm proud to share that Maverick Insurance Brokers has officially partnered with the Brampton Honey Badgers of the Canadian Elite Basketball League.

Why I built Maverick the way I did

There's a lot of consolidation happening in the Insurance industry. Brokerages get bought up, folded into bigger networks, turned into call centres. Clients used to have a person embedded in their community. Now they get a queue.

There's also a wave of retirements happening — brokers stepping away after decades, leaving clients without anyone who really knows them. For me, that's an opportunity to welcome those clients into Maverick and give them back what they lost.

I built Maverick to fill that gap - a Private Client Advisor offering real relationship, expertise, and access. Someone reliable in your corner, especially now, in the middle of the greatest wealth transfer this country has seen, with portfolios only getting more and more complex.

Basketball has always been more than a game

Basketball has been an outlet for my mental health for as long as I can remember. Some of my closest friendships came out of a shared love of the sport. These days I get to share that love of the game with people close to me, around the city we all call home. Watching the Honey Badgers play is where like-minded Brampton professionals come together around something we all genuinely enjoy.

Sitting down with Al Whitley

When Al and I sat down, he shared his story and his vision for the team, and I knew right there he'd turn this into a champion. What stood out most was his genuine passion for the game and a bigger vision — not just for the team, but for Brampton and for Canada. I knew immediately this was a natural alignment — built around a shared love of the game.

Fearless and Gritty — that's Brampton

People describe this team as fearless and gritty. The more I know this organization, the more that description fits the whole city. Brampton has countless stories of people who showed up and built something from nothing — entrepreneurs, immigrant families, first generation founders. Watching the Honey Badgers compete with that same energy, in our own backyard, just feels right.

This city doesn't get enough credit for what's actually happening here — one of the fastest growing entrepreneurial bases in the country, a real creative community, and now a pro basketball team with the best start in franchise history!

Relationships over transactions — always

This partnership is, in a lot of ways, an extension of how I run Maverick day to day. While the rest of the industry consolidates toward scale and speed, I want Maverick to be something different — where clients feel genuinely supported, connected to real expertise, and confident they have the right people in their corner to help them accomplish their goals.

The Honey Badgers operate on that same wavelength. They're building more than a basketball team — they're building a place where this city can come together, connect, and feel something real. That's the kind of partner I want next to the Maverick name.
